Wellness & spa experience — 70 points
The list of wellness and cosmetic treatments at the Residence von Dapper leaves hardly a wish unfulfilled — from the classic wellness massage to the hot-stone massage the most popular treatments are represented. Women in particular can be pampered with professional cosmetic treatments on the top floor. The house's wellness area lies in the basement; once there, you quickly feel yourself in an oasis of recreation. You are welcomed by the “wellness hens”, as the staff at the Residence are affectionately called. Besides a varied sauna world a small but fine pool provides the necessary refreshment in between, and a solarium stands ready for recharging. The cosily furnished rest room enchants with its lighting and music; stylish, coordinated decorative elements and a calming light colour scheme make you quickly forget everyday life. Our test stays honest on two points: the aroma-oil massage included in the offer felt to us more like a gentle oiling — for strong tension we recommend one of the numerous more vigorous treatments. And the tea bar offered merely three kinds of tea bag and a jug of water, plus apples for the circulation; a little more choice and care with the wellness fare would be desirable here. Very pleasing, by contrast, was how well-kept and clean the whole area was — the love of detail is unmistakable. A whole day in the wellness area is definitely worth it.

“The most important meal of the day is breakfast.” The Residence von Dapper has truly taken this wisdom to heart and implemented it outstandingly: the rich breakfast buffet has something for every taste, and even allergy sufferers and vegans are not disappointed. A wide variety of regional delicacies stands beside a sensational tea buffet — the best conditions for a glorious holiday day. A breakfast like this you wish for every day. In the evening you go into the stylishly and modernly furnished restaurant, where the Dapper kitchen holds a daily changing three-course choice menu ready. As an aperitif we strongly recommend a glass of sparkling wine from the Dappers' own wine estate. For the starter we were allowed to enjoy an excellent tomato soup with Parmesan shavings — a perfectly seasoned introduction to the menu that followed. For the main course that evening a turkey cordon bleu on mushrooms à la crème with roasted baby potatoes, a baked redfish with beetroot and fiocchetti and a green-spelt-and-hemp patty were on offer. The dish followed the cooking style of typical Bavarian cuisine: down-to-earth, lavish and simply delicious. The menu was rounded off with a tasty, refreshing tonka-bean mousse. In the end it was a satisfying dinner one would gladly enjoy more often — only a pinch more love, passion and creativity in the craft would have done it good. A young, friendly member of the service staff accompanied us through the evening.

You are received quite classically at the Residence von Dapper; the reception area carries the matt gleam of days gone by. Check-in is functional and quick, and as a small courtesy there is a welcome drink. Precisely on arrival, though, we would have wished for a little more passion, personality and hospitality. Very advantageous is the Bad Kissingen guest card, which every guest receives on arrival: it brings useful discounts — free bus journeys on local transport, free admission to the nearby casino and reduced admission to the KissSalis Therme. During the stay magazines and brochures lie ready in the lobby at all times, and on request you get comfortable bathing slippers for the wellness area.
Rooms — 80 points
During our “short break” we resided in a standard double room. The charm of the historic house comes through only discreetly in the rooms tested — a conservative, plain style runs through the generously cut room. The 27 rooms in all do hold surprises, though: the highlight of the Residence is the spa suite with a waterbed, a steam sauna and an infrared cabin. In our room too there was something to marvel at — a beautifully prepared wicker bag with fluffy bathrobes and towels stands ready for every guest and immediately whets the appetite for a restful wellness day. From the balcony you enjoy a picturesque view over Bad Kissingen. Equally impressive is the general state of the furnishings: everything very well-kept and clean. The only small drawback was the hard mattresses — which is only half as bad, because afterwards you feel like the next massage anyway.

Bad Kissingen lies in the valley of the Franconian Saale in Lower Franconia. Germany's best-known spa town captivates above all with its award-winning rose garden, the well-kept spa gardens and the historic mansions. Especially in summer, when the gardens stand in full splendour, the rose town is worth an excursion. Thanks to ideal road and rail connections the place is easy to reach from all over Germany; whoever arrives by car gets a parking card for the duration of the stay against a deposit, and there are enough parking spaces in front of and behind the hotel. The small, charming town centre, shaped by the Belle Époque, holds a varied leisure and cultural programme ready all year; sights and shops are reached from the Residence in a few minutes' walk. After a restful day in the spa grounds, the nearby KissSalis Therme or a massage at the hotel, the evening can be rounded off wonderfully in the Bad Kissingen casino — if you want to try your luck for once. The Rhön biosphere reserve also offers cycle and hiking trails for every age group and in all degrees of difficulty. Not to be missed are the nearby Kreuzberg monastery, the Wasserkuppe and the Schwarzes Moor near Fladungen. Numerous sights in the surroundings wait to be discovered — the best conditions for body and mind to recharge.

Far from mass tourism the Residence von Dapper is the right place to withdraw from stressful everyday life for a few days. As soon as you enter the historic house, time seems to run a little slower. The small but successful wellness area and the rooms invite you to more than one night. Whoever values stillness and wants to draw new strength from absolute calm could lose a piece of their heart to the Residence. Down-to-earthness, paired with modesty and a family atmosphere, may be expected here — and the price-performance level is top. Wellness Royal can recommend a stay without reservation.
