Holidays & wellness in Bad Kissingen

Since 24 July 2021 Bad Kissingen has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage “Great Spa Towns of Europe” — one of the eleven most important European spa towns, in a line with Baden-Baden, Bad Ems, Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně, Spa, Vichy, Baden bei Wien, Montecatini Terme and Bath. The Lower Franconian town at the Saale gateway to the Rhön carries more than 1,200 years of saltworks and spa history; in the 19th century it was an international “world spa” — Bismarck's summer residence, Emperor Wilhelm I's favourite place, and the resort of Tolstoy, Empress Elisabeth (“Sisi”), Bertha von Suttner and numerous further figures of the European aristocracy. The wellness substance is preserved: the Regentenbau ensemble, the central spa garden with the four healing springs Rákóczi, Pandur, Maxbrunnen and Schönbornsprudel, the Obere Saline as Bismarck's summer residence, the Wandelhalle as the longest pump-room arcade in Germany (90 m). A modern addition: the KissSalis Therme as a contemporary spa address with brine healing water.

Why wellness here?

Bad Kissingen's wellness lineage is one of the oldest in Central Europe. Salt production has been documented since the 9th century; the healing effect of the springs was first described in the 16th century. The decisive boost came in the 19th century as a “world spa” — between 1874 and 1893 Otto von Bismarck spent several weeks in Bad Kissingen every year and conducted politics from here; the famous “Kissingen Dictation” (1877), Bismarck's foreign-policy programme, was written here. Emperor Wilhelm I took the cure almost every year; Tsar Alexander II, Empress Elisabeth Sisi, Bertha von Suttner, Leo Tolstoy, Theodore Roosevelt, the painter Adolph von Menzel — Bad Kissingen's guest list is a concentrated social history of the 19th century. Four state-recognised healing springs carry today's wellness substance. The Rákóczi spring (discovered 1737, the highest mineral content) and the Pandur spring lie in the historic spa garden and are classically used in drinking cures for gastrointestinal diseases, metabolic disorders and liver complaints. The Maxbrunnen (brine healing water) and the Schönbornsprudel (brine) complete the spectrum. The KissSalis Therme (opened 2004) carries the brine healing water into contemporary thermal architecture. The Regentenbau ensemble (opened 1913 as pump-room arcade and concert hall) is the main venue of the “Kissinger Sommer” — one of the most important classical music festivals in Bavaria, which draws around 50,000 visitors every year from mid-June to mid-July. The Obere Saline on the northern edge of the old town served Bismarck as his summer residence and is today the Bismarck Museum.

When to travel here

May–October as the main season — the historic spa park in full bloom, drinking cures at the Rákóczi and Pandur, walks along the 90 m Wandelhalle. Mid-June to mid-July: the Kissinger Sommer (a classical festival, more than 100 concerts a year in the Regentenbau and the town's concert halls). September for Indian summer and wine wellness in Main Franconia. High summer (July/August) pleasant thanks to the Saale-valley position. Winter (December–February): the classic winter season in the spa towns, Advent markets; the KissSalis Therme in high-season occupancy. The shoulder months (March/April and November) as insider phases for longer cure stays without the crowds.

Frequently asked questions about the region

What does UNESCO World Heritage “Great Spa Towns of Europe” mean for Bad Kissingen?

On 24 July 2021 Bad Kissingen was added to the UNESCO list as part of the transnational World Heritage “Great Spa Towns of Europe” — together with ten further important European spa towns (Baden-Baden, Bad Ems in Germany; Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně, Františkovy Lázně in the Czech Republic; Spa, Vichy, Baden bei Wien, Montecatini Terme, Bath).

Concretely honoured are: the Regentenbau ensemble (1913), the central spa district with the historic spa garden and the Rákóczi, Pandur and Maxbrunnen spring installations, the Wandelhalle (90 m, the longest in Germany), the saltworks area north of the old town and the Obere Saline as Bismarck's summer residence. Whoever stays in Bad Kissingen sleeps in a historically protected UNESCO World Heritage backdrop from the heyday of European spa culture (1850–1914).

Which healing springs — and which indications?

Four state-recognised healing springs carry the wellness substance of Bad Kissingen.

Rákóczi spring (discovered 1737, named after the Hungarian prince Francis II Rákóczi): the highest mineral content among the Kissingen springs. A drinking cure for gastrointestinal diseases, metabolic disorders, liver complaints.

Pandur spring (discovered 1750): more carbonated, less mineral-rich water. Classically for circulatory dysfunctions and vegetative exhaustion.

Maxbrunnen (brine healing water): for respiratory diseases (inhalation cure) and chronic bronchial complaints.

Schönbornsprudel (brine): for gastrointestinal diseases, a drinking cure at the spring.

The KissSalis Therme uses brine healing water from around 350 m deep in pool and sauna treatments.

What was Bismarck's relationship with Bad Kissingen?

Between 1874 and 1893 Otto von Bismarck spent several weeks in Bad Kissingen every year — 14 documented cure stays in total. He lived in the “Obere Saline” on the northern edge of the old town (today the Bismarck Museum). During these cure stays he continued to conduct imperial politics from Bad Kissingen; the famous “Kissingen Dictation” of 1877 — Bismarck's foreign-policy programme — was written here.

In 1874 Bismarck narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in Bad Kissingen by the cooper's apprentice Eduard Kullmann. Bismarck statues, the Bismarck Museum and the Bismarck pharmacy (at the corner of Salinenstraße and the Kissingen market square) recall the connection.

What is the Kissinger Sommer?

The Kissinger Sommer is one of the most important classical music festivals in Bavaria — every year from mid-June to mid-July, with around 100 concerts in the Regentenbau and further Kissingen concert halls. More than 50,000 visitors a year. A focus on classical and romantic music, with emphasis on the great symphony orchestras and renowned soloists.

The festival was founded in 1986 and has since belonged to Bad Kissingen's high-summer peak seasons — whoever comes at this time should book well in advance, as the hotels are frequently fully booked.

When is the best time to travel?

May/June: the optimal main wellness season — the spa park in full bloom, drinking cures at the open springs, a mild climate. Mid-June–mid-July: the Kissinger Sommer (classical festival, high-price phase, often fully booked). September/October: Indian summer with clear views and lower prices — ideal for quieter cure stays.

December–February: the classic winter season in the spa towns, Advent markets in the old town, the KissSalis Therme in high-season occupancy. March/April and November as insider shoulders for longer cure stays without the crowds.

UNESCO World Heritage since 2021 — Bad Kissingen as a Great Spa Town

On 24 July 2021 UNESCO added eleven important European spa towns jointly to the World Heritage list as the “Great Spa Towns of Europe” — a transnational serial World Heritage site honouring the European spa culture of the 18th and 19th centuries. Three of the eleven towns lie in Germany: Baden-Baden, Bad Ems and Bad Kissingen. Concretely honoured in Bad Kissingen are the Regentenbau ensemble (opened 1913) with the 90-metre Wandelhalle, the historic spa garden with the Rákóczi, Pandur and Maxbrunnen healing springs, the saltworks area north of the old town and the Obere Saline as Bismarck's summer residence. Whoever stays in Bad Kissingen moves in a largely unchanged UNESCO World Heritage backdrop from the Belle Époque.

Four healing springs — and the classic drinking-cure tradition

Bad Kissingen's wellness substance rests on four state-recognised healing springs. The Rákóczi spring — discovered in 1737 and named after the Hungarian prince Francis II Rákóczi — carries the highest mineral content of the Kissingen springs and is classically used in drinking cures for gastrointestinal diseases, metabolic disorders and liver complaints. The Pandur spring (1750) adds more carbonated water for circulatory dysfunctions. The Maxbrunnen (brine healing water) and the Schönbornsprudel (likewise brine) round off the spectrum — the Maxbrunnen above all for inhalation cures for respiratory diseases. The KissSalis Therme as a modern addition carries the brine healing water from around 350 m deep into contemporary thermal architecture.

The “world spa” of the 19th century — Bismarck, Sisi, Tolstoy

In the 19th century Bad Kissingen was the internationally most visited German spa town — the list of its guests reads like a social register of the European aristocracy. Between 1874 and 1893 Otto von Bismarck spent fourteen cure stays in the Obere Saline and continued to conduct imperial politics from here; the “Kissingen Dictation” of 1877, his foreign-policy programme, was written here. Emperor Wilhelm I took the cure almost every year; Tsar Alexander II several times; Empress Elisabeth Sisi in 1862; Leo Tolstoy in 1857; Bertha von Suttner; Theodore Roosevelt. The Bismarck statues, the Bismarck Museum in the Obere Saline and the Bismarck pharmacy on the Salinenstraße recall the historical importance of the town to this day.

Kissinger Sommer — one of the most important classical festivals in Bavaria

The Kissinger Sommer was founded in 1986 and counts today among the most important classical music festivals in Bavaria. Every year from mid-June to mid-July: around 100 concerts in the Regentenbau, the Rossini Hall and further concert halls of the town; around 50,000 visitors a season. A focus on great symphony orchestras, renowned soloists and featured composers. During the festival Bad Kissingen is in its most intense season — hotels frequently booked out months ahead, restaurants and concert tickets require advance booking.
