Hiking the Kampenwand in the Chiemgau: wellness for the advanced

As is well known, wellness does not happen only in hotels and spas, agreeable though it certainly is there. What is quite decisive for feeling good in the long run is above all physical activity. And that should be fun, of course, not merely a means to an end. Hiking lends itself to this quite naturally — but here it is not about “typical” hiking through wood and meadow, rather about an experience with a view: an excursion to the Kampenwand in the Chiemgau.

The Kampenwand in the Chiemgau

The name Kampenwand comes from the look of the almost 1,700-metre mountain in the Chiemgau Alps: with its jagged profile the summit recalls a rooster's comb. Its impressive height and rugged appearance should not put you off, however, for the peak has a great deal to offer wellness tourists too, with routes of every difficulty. Above all the Bavarian rhyme associated with it should convince you to venture a small tour:

*I gangat gern auf d' Kampenwand, wann i mit meiner Wamp'n kannt'.* (I would gladly go up the Kampenwand, if I could manage it with this belly of mine.)

The Kampenwand is crowned by the largest summit cross in the Bavarian Alps; the view is, as you would expect, heavenly and rewards every hike — but whoever absolutely wants to move as little as possible can also take the cable car.

You will find more information about the Kampenwand here:

  • The website of the Kampenwand cable car, with plenty of information
  • The website of the municipality of Aschau (where the Kampenwand is)
  • “Auf die Kampenwand im Chiemgau” (Süddeutsche Zeitung)
