The climate that demands
A bracing climate is the therapeutic opposite of a sparing climate: wind, cool and moist air, intensive sunlight and — on the coasts — the iodine-rich salt aerosols of the surf set the body targeted stimuli to which it answers with adaptation. The German reference is the North Sea, above all the islands: the bracing climate of Sylt, for instance, combines surf aerosols, cool moist air and virtually pollen-free breathing air into a natural therapeutic agent.
How the stimuli work
Three mechanisms carry the effect: the salty aerosols reach the mucous membranes when you breathe and are classically used for airway concerns; the cool, moist, moving air trains circulation and defences through constant thermoregulation; and the low-allergen air — there is hardly any pollen over the sea — gives allergy sufferers weeks of peace. Classic indications are asthma, chronic bronchitis, hay fever, neurodermatitis and psoriasis.
North Sea, Baltic, high mountains
The most vigorous bracing climate is carried by the North Sea with its tides and its wind; the Baltic offers the milder coastal variant — more pleasant for beginners, families and longer stays. The high mountains above about 1,500 metres also count in the bracing-climate family: cool, pure, low-pollen mountain air with intensive sun. What all have in common: the effect needs time.
Bracing climate for wellness travellers
Cure medicine reckons in weeks for a genuine climate effect — two to three is the classic measure, ideally in the quiet shoulder seasons of spring and autumn. But the wellness weekend on the coast uses the principle too: a walk along the surf as inhalation, sea air as a sleeping aid, the spa for warming up. Whoever means it more seriously combines the bracing climate with thalasso treatments — sea water from outside, sea air from within.
