According to legend the monk Beatus once drove a dragon out of his cave on the northern shore of Lake Thun — the St. Beatus Caves carry his name to this day, and so does this house on the same shore. Between the steeply rising slopes and the turquoise-green water of the lake lies the BEATUS in Merligen, where Bernese Oberland tourism shows its quieter side, turned towards the water.
Water that flows into the lake. The showpiece is a heated open-air brine pool with the salt content of seawater, kept at 35 °C, that seems to run without a boundary into Lake Thun — you swim out of the warm brine towards the open lake. 277 metres of lakeshore of its own, the longest any Swiss spa hotel can call its own, make the water the real host.
Bamboo and Vitalità. The sauna landscape carries the name Bamboo and relies on Far Eastern calm; the Vitalità spa takes up massages, facial and body treatments. Three restaurants and a piano bar round off a house run since 1988 by a well-rehearsed team — Bernese hospitality without the bustle of the large Oberland resorts.

The heated open-air brine pool has the salt content of seawater, is kept at 35 °C and visually runs boundlessly into Lake Thun — the transition from warm brine to the cool mountain lake is the signature experience of the house. Whoever likes swims straight out into the lake in summer; the salt carries you, the panorama of the Niesen and the Stockhorn frames the bath.
Saunas under a Far Eastern sign
The Bamboo sauna landscape bundles a Finnish sauna, a steam bath and rest rooms in an Asian-inspired design — a calm counter-world to the open water outside. Infusions and retreat zones with a lake view are part of it.

The Vitalità spa takes up the treatment offering: massages, facial and body treatments, attuned to recreation and regeneration. The view from the treatment rooms always seeks the water.
On the northern shore of Lake Thun
With 277 metres of private lake frontage the house lies right on the water; a boat jetty and a sunbathing lawn of its own included. Right on the shore open the eponymous St. Beatus Caves, a dripstone cave system with the Beatus legend; Thun, Interlaken and the summits of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau are quickly reached by boat or road.
