The Stadtpark: Hamburg's green heart & wellness oasis

If the Alster is Hamburg's blue lung, then the Stadtpark is its green heart and the oasis for wellness in Hamburg. Across 148 hectares, Hamburgers and tourists from all over the world find magnificent recreation and entertainment in every season. Open since 1914, the park still draws visitors who want to let the soul dangle in the middle of the city. What makes the Stadtpark so special — and why every Hamburger has already set foot in it — is explained in the article below!

The Stadtpark is the wellness oasis in the middle of Hamburg. It has something for everyone: from relaxation to sport and even exciting education at the planetarium

Reachable for all! The Stadtpark lies directly north of the city

The park belongs to the district of Winterhude in the borough of Hamburg-Nord. At its opening in 1914 it counted as the flagship of a movement that wanted to make gardens for recreation and edification possible for all sections of the population. And so to this day the park addresses as many preferences and every age.

Its position between the office quarter of City Nord, the originally working-class district of Barmbek and the more upmarket villa streets in southern Winterhude makes the concept of a park without boundaries perfect. Many entrances, very good transport connections and ample parking ensure excellent accessibility. Wellness for all!

Hamburg in the stars

One of the most impressive buildings in the Stadtpark is the planetarium, opened in 1930. Formerly a water tower in the Schumacher style, it now houses the history of the universe. Every school class in Hamburg comes here to catch a glimpse of the stars — and on summer evenings floodlights illuminate the landmark of the Stadtpark while music puts people on the surrounding lawns in a relaxed mood.

Sport in the Stadtpark

A jogging circuit around the park measures 5 kilometres, but whoever really runs every path within it easily reaches 12 and more. Many runners use the route because it is varied and offers shelter under shady trees in the summer heat. Whoever does not want to run plays boules, visits the natural lake lido or meets up on the beach volleyball court. Many outdoor sports facilities invite fitness enthusiasts to give their all.

With dog and child

The Stadtpark's adventure playground is especially popular throughout Hamburg. Naturally there are smaller play areas around the park too — but the climbing ropes, the pirate ship and the large paddling pool are the greatest highlight for children. In the park only dogs with official exemption from the leash requirement are allowed off the lead. But there is a fenced dog play area for all visitors too!

Several restaurants see to bodily well-being in the Stadtpark, and entertainment for adults is provided on the large open-air stage — even the Rolling Stones have already given a concert here!
