Medical wellness — a real health benefit or just a holiday?

Hardly has an understanding of the term wellness taken hold when new ones appear — medical wellness, for instance. While wellness is understood above all as whirlpool, sauna and luxurious ambience, medical wellness often causes misunderstandings. What is meant is health-oriented wellness under medical supervision: not a mere pampering holiday but a preventive, behavioural-medicine approach.

Medical wellness — definition — what is the goal?

The term wellness was coined in the 1950s by the American physician Halbert Dunn — as the vision of an active, self-responsible health prevention. Medical wellness thinks this idea through consistently: instead of doing something good for yourself only for the moment, it is about a lasting change of behaviour and attitude to life, towards a healthier lifestyle that carries beyond the stay in the hotel. What is special is the medical supervision — with diagnostics, individual counselling and the express aim of anchoring the changes in everyday life at home.

Who are these treatments for?

The answer is clear: for everyone who wants to change their way of life sustainably. One example is the Ayurveda concept, in which nutrition, movement and rituals such as yoga come together under expert guidance. People with elevated risk factors or chronic complaints too — rheumatism, back problems or the wish to stop smoking, say — benefit from medically supervised cures. The programme is complemented by classic building blocks such as massages or visits to thermal baths. Under specialist medical supervision a lifestyle can be changed step by step in this way — with the aim of more quality of life and well-being.

Back to inner calm and balance

Stress and an unhealthy way of life shape the health behaviour of many people today. A spa hotel or a massage offers relaxation in between. But whoever wants to change their life and their attitude from the ground up is better advised with medical supervision. A medical wellness stay supports exactly that — finding inner balance again and carrying on at home what was learned there, for a better sense of life in the long run.

Frequently asked questions

What is medical wellness?

Health-oriented wellness under medical supervision. Unlike the pure pampering holiday, medical wellness aims at prevention and a lasting change of lifestyle — with diagnostics, individual counselling and the aim of keeping up what was learned in everyday life at home.

How does medical wellness differ from ordinary wellness?

Classic wellness — sauna, massage, beautiful surroundings — gives relaxation for the moment. Medical wellness is oriented towards behavioural medicine: medically supervised, with measurable goals and a concept that carries beyond the stay. Put simply: wellness is recreation, medical wellness is recreation plus prevention.

Who is medical wellness suitable for?

For everyone who wants to change their lifestyle sustainably — and especially for people with elevated risk factors or the wish to change a habit (smoking, for instance). With chronic complaints such a programme belongs under medical supervision; it does not replace treatment but complements it.

A real health benefit or just a feel-good holiday?

Both are possible — the difference lies in the concept. A single spa weekend is above all recreation. A medically supervised medical wellness programme with diagnostics, movement and nutrition modules and a clear transfer into everyday life, by contrast, can work preventively. What is decisive is whether the changes live on at home — otherwise it remains a lovely holiday.

How do I recognise serious medical wellness?

By medical leadership instead of a mere wellness label: a responsible physician, an entry diagnosis, an individually tuned concept and follow-up care that accompanies the transfer into everyday life. Where “medical” appears only as a marketing word, without professional supervision, scepticism is called for.
