With an area of more than 600,000 hectares the Bavarian Forest is one of the largest contiguous forest areas left in Europe. A third of the total area is declared a nature reserve. Because the national park is not used commercially, rivers and streams seek their own way through the wild-growing woods. On a hike you should not walk past Neuschwanstein Castle, the Gothic fairy-tale castle of Ludwig II. The tragic king spent a great deal of time here. You can see how versatile and picturesque the Allgäu is.
