Deep in the south of Germany lies the federal state of Bavaria. With a certain resemblance to neighbouring Austria, Bavaria too has magnificent regions for a winter or wellness holiday. From the Spessart to Kaufbeuren, from mountains to flatland, this state has everything that makes for pleasure and good spirits.
A winter wonderland
In the Spessart the land lies open before you. Suddenly small hills rise out of the ground. This is a first-class region for winter sports. From spectacular pistes to the most exclusive spa hotel, there is rather more here for the quieter holidaymaker. In Aschaffenburg you come upon a town well worth admiring. Easy walks along the Main — with the right clothing and the necessary kit such as rucksacks and sturdy hiking boots — are simply part of this region.
Further towards Würzburg and Nuremberg you discover an outstanding area for a relaxed wellness holiday. Here too numerous treatments are on the programme: massages, special cosmetic treatments and rest programmes. Afterwards you explore the white winter landscape on foot or on one of the carriage rides on offer. In Bamberg you meet a town with a good number of hotels with a wellness offering. The absolute highlight, though, is Little Venice — although boat trips only run when the water is not frozen.
Adventure and sport from Munich onwards
From Munich onwards the cheerful snowfall begins. In Munich itself, however, you will only meet high society, gathering in the evening after a long day of skiing. For winter sports the guest has to push a little deeper into Bavaria. Only about 100 kilometres further on you find yourself in the Chiemgau region. Here the wild mountains call every skier and winter-sports enthusiast. With exciting pistes that reach up to an altitude of 1,674 metres, the descents are spread across the whole region. Along the Austrian border Bavaria shares its mountains with its friendly neighbours. The Berchtesgaden National Park offers ideal conditions for hiking and for practising sport. The setting here is magnificent for experiencing complete recreation and relaxation.
